Pinchas Lawon
Pinchas Lawon ( Hebrew פנחס לבון, often also after the English spelling Pinhas Lavon ; born Pinhas Lubianiker ; born on July 12, 1904 in Kopytschynzi , Galicia (today Ukraine ); died January 24, 1976 in Tel-Aviv , Israel) was an Israeli Labor Party politician .
Lawon emigrated to Palestine in 1929 after studying law in Poland . There he led a group that was rebuilding a community that had been destroyed in the Arab uprisings. In the years 1937–1938 he shared the post of General Secretary of the Mapai with Jitzchak Ben Aharon , in whose executive committee he was elected in 1942.
He was a member of the Knesset from the first Israeli parliamentary election in 1949 until 1961 and became Minister of Agriculture in the second government in 1950. In the next two cabinets of the second Knesset he was minister without portfolio and finally in the fifth cabinet, under Moshe Sharet , he was defense minister ; he held this office until February 21, 1955. He had already been elected Secretary General of the Histadrut in 1949, a post he held until 1950 and again from 1956 to 1961, when he lost this post because of the Lawon affair , for which he had to resign as Defense Minister.
Lawon affair
The Lawon affair, which weighed on Israeli domestic politics for a decade, got started with the exposure of Jewish spies in Egypt . These attacked American targets in Egypt in order to cause diplomatic damage between these countries. The political responsibility for this was a dispute for years, in which on the one hand Moshe Dajan , Shimon Peres and above all David Ben Gurion stood who blamed Lawon, and on the other hand Lawon himself, who accused Benjamin Gibli , behind his back Having planned attacks. Although Lawon was supported by Moshe Sharet and Golda Meïr and a seven-member commission of ministers rejected the allegations, he was ultimately defeated in the political intrigue and ended his political career.
