Paul Schachtschabel

Paul Otto Schachtschabel (born June 4, 1904 in Gumperda , † February 4, 1998 in Hanover ) was a German soil scientist .

Life

He studied chemistry , mineralogy and physics in Jena , where he also received his doctorate in 1929 . In 1939 he qualified as a professor for the subjects of soil science and plant nutrition with the title Sorption of the inorganic and organic colloids of the soil . After interim employment at the Agricultural Research Institute in Stuttgart-Hohenheim and at the Soil Science Institute of the University of Göttingen , he held the chair for soil science at the University of Horticulture and Regional Culture from 1948 until his retirement in 1971, and later a chair at the University of Hanover .

From 1965 to 1969 he was Vice President of the German Soil Science Society , which made him an honorary member in 1973.

Schachtschabel was co-author of the 9th to 14th edition of the standard work of his mentor Fritz Scheffer Scheffer / Schachtschabel textbook of soil science .

Schachtschabel's students included Karl-Heinrich Hartge and Udo Schwertmann .

Honors

He was an honorary doctorate (Dr. agr. Hc.) From the University of Kiel and received the Hugo Neubauer Award from the Association of Agricultural Research and Research Institutes .
