Udo Schwertmann

Udo Schwertmann (born November 25, 1927 in Stade ; † January 20, 2016 in Freising ) was a German soil scientist . He was best known for his research on iron oxides ; the mineral sword mannite is named after him.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1945, Schwertmann completed an apprenticeship as a gardener and then studied first horticulture and then chemistry in Hanover . In 1961 he completed his habilitation on clay minerals in soils and sediments and in 1964 he became full professor and director of the Institute for Soil Science at the TU Berlin . From 1970 until his retirement in 1995 he held the newly created chair for soil science at the Technical University of Munich .

Udo Schwertmann wrote more than 250 publications in soil science and several monographs and handbooks . He was co-author of several editions of the German standard textbook Scheffer / Schachtschabel textbook of soil science . With The iron oxides , he wrote another standard work together with Rochelle Cornell based on his research on the formation conditions and forms of iron oxides in soils.

Awards

The mineral Schwertmannite ( eng. Schwertmannite ) was named after him in 1994. Schwertmann is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy , was the Clay Minerals Society for Pioneer in Clay Science appointed and received in 1996 by the University of Kiel , the honorary doctorate . He was also the recipient of the Philippe Duchaufour Medal of the European Geosciences Union . In 1987 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was an honorary member of the German Soil Science Society .
