Michel Vieuchange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michel Vieuchange (born August 26, 1904 in Nevers , † November 30, 1930 in Agadir ) was a French adventurer. He was the first European to tour the forbidden city of Smara in the Sahara .

Life

The aim of his trip was to collect material for a novel . On September 10, 1930 he started his expedition without knowing the exact location of Smara. He reached the city with great difficulty and weakened by illness. Since the region was forbidden to Christians at the time, he traveled partly disguised as a Berber woman or was hidden in sacks by his Arab companions and tied on a donkey.

He managed to return to Tiznit on November 16, but died shortly afterwards in Agadir at the age of 26 from bacterial dysentery that he contracted during the trip.

His brother published the notes written on the trip under the title Smara - The Forbidden City in 1937.
