Josef Sayer
Josef Sayer (born December 19, 1941 in Apatin , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ) is a German , Roman Catholic theologian , clergyman and development worker . From 1997 to 2012 he was Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Misereor .
Life
After his expulsion and flight to Germany between 1945 and 1947, he studied philosophy and theology in Rome and Tübingen as well as social sciences and history in Constance . At the social science faculty of the University of Konstanz he received his doctorate in 1975 with the work Social Change in the Church - an empirical study on socialization in the priestly profession . From 1968 to 1980 he pursued an academic career which included various positions as a research assistant. He was assistant to Bruno Schlegelberger at the theological seminar of the University of Education in Berlin .
From 1980 he worked as a development worker in the Peruvian Andes and after his ordination in 1982 in Cuzco as a pastor in a slum parish in Lima . He was involved in building church communities, accompanying the rural population in their confrontation with Western culture as well as with Marxism .
In 1988 he received a call on the Chair of Pastoral Theology at the Theological Faculty of the University of Friborg . Since December 1, 1997, he has been the general manager and chairman of the board of Misereor in Aachen , he retired on March 23, 2012 and was replaced by Pirmin Spiegel . On his 70th birthday in 2012, he was presented with the Horizon World Church . The authors include two cardinals, five German bishops and four theology professors from the University of Tübingen.
From 2001 to 2007 he was a member of the Council for Sustainable Development . He is a member of the Cor Unum Pontifical Council .
