Bruno Schlegelberger (born April 15, 1934 in Berlin ) is a Catholic clergyman and theologian. He is a member of the Jesuits and a professor emeritus of Catholic theology.

Life

In 1954 Schlegelberger joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). After studying in Germany, France and Spain, he acquired the degrees Lic Phil (Chantilly, 1960), Lic Theol (Frankfurt 1966). He received his doctorate in Berlin in 1970. From 1970 to 1974 he was head of the Catholic student chaplaincy in West Berlin. In 1974 he was appointed to the chair of Catholic theology at what was then PH Berlin . In 1980 the PH was integrated into the Free University of Berlin , to which Schlegelberger also moved. As a result of the vacancy of the chair for Catholic Systematic Theology at the Free University of Berlin, Schlegelberger represented the subject of systematics from 1980 to 1982 and was the only professor to organize the entire teaching of the seminar for Catholic theology. In 1999 Schlegelberger retired. He continued his publications.

Schlegelberger did extensive research on Christianity and religion in Latin America and did research mainly in Peru and Colombia . In conversations with 33 liberation theologians, for example with Leonardo Boff , Gustavo Gutiérrez and Jon Sobrino , he received first-hand information and was able to explain what the South American theology of liberation “is and wants”.

During his information event on October 5, 1984, he expressed concern about the critical statements in the instruction on some aspects of the “Theology of Liberation” of August 6, 1984 by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger on behalf of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . He countered the “destructive accusation of historicist immanentism” with equating salvation history and secular history. He outlined the reasons why he considered liberation theology in particular to be "capable and called" to "intercept messianic hopes for Marxism."
