Maria-Anzbach is a market town with 3064 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Sankt Pölten-Land in Lower Austria . The spelling differentiates between municipality, place and cadastral municipality . While the name of the municipality and the place is connected with a hyphen , the name of the cadastral municipality is written separately.

geography

Maria Anzbach is located in the Mostviertel southeast of Neulengbach in the valley of Anzbaches , a tributary of the River Tulln . The area of ​​the market town covers 18.19 square kilometers. 36.31 percent of the area is forested. The two highest elevations are in the north of the Buchberg (469 m) with the Buchbergwarte and in the south of the Kohlreithberg (516 m).

history

antiquity

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

On April 29, 998, Maria-Anzbach was first mentioned in a document as Amizinesbach .

First Turkish storm

The place experienced the first Turkish storm in 1529, when the church was largely destroyed.

Second Turkish storm and plague time

In 1683 the second Turkish storm brought again great destruction to the place. a. Mills, brewery and Wasen Castle completely destroyed. The church remained unscathed thanks to an extinguished torch that flew into the wooden pulpit. The extinguished torch can be seen in the church in a glass box. As a result of the Turkish storm, the plague began and the area around Maria-Anzbach almost died out over the decades. After the plague, the area was repopulated by settlers from Bavaria , Upper Austria , Salzburg and the Palatinate .

French War

French War 1805–1809: The Napoleonic army held a stage station in Purkersdorf , while the soldiers plundered the area and clashes broke out.

Market survey

In 1933 at the market survey ceremony, Anzbach was given the nickname Maria . So Anzbach became Maria-Anzbach. The coat of arms received the miraculous image.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census , there were 2621 inhabitants. In 2018 the market town had 3055 inhabitants, in 1991 2562, 1981 2151 and in 1971 1808 inhabitants.

• Catholic parish and pilgrimage church Maria-Anzbach Our Lady as Mother of Mercy
• Grafenhaus: Important people used to live here. The count's house is said to have been the seat of the "high freemen of Amizinesbach", who ruled Maria-Anzbach from 1090 to 1203. This property has been owned by the Walderdorff family since 1923.
• Forge: On the facade of the forge is a relief of a head of a Turk from the Turkish era. There used to be an underground passage in the cellar of the forge, which presumably led to the church.
• Schönbeck-Mühle: The mill produced the first electrical power for the town in the 1910s. Today there is a local museum and a restaurant (currently closed).
• Annunziatakloster : The Annunziatakloster "Am Stein" at Klosterstrasse 5 in Furth, founded on August 4th 1898 and belonging to the community of Maria-Anzbach, ceased operations at the end of March 2011. Before that, on June 19, 2010, the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the monastery church, built in the neo-Gothic style of late historicism from 1899 - a work by the imperial court architect Josef Schmalzhofer - was celebrated. It was sold to a group of investors in June 2012 for EUR 2.3 million. A retreat for the elderly and affordable housing were planned. After the failure of the plans, the area was sold to a Burgenland investment company in 2015. Director Helmut Manninger created the movie The Great Journey in 2013 about the closure of the monastery .
• Ludovikaheim: St. Louise nursing home in Meierhöfen, formerly an agricultural area, was acquired by the Sisters of Charity in 1898 . In 1931 the house was rebuilt and still serves as a retirement home today. In 2015 the nursing home was expanded.
• Buchbergwarte : The observation tower on the summit of the Buchberg was built in 2004 and is 22.5 meters high.

economy

In 2001 there were 109 non-agricultural workplaces, agricultural and forestry operations 56 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 1,176. In 2001 the employment rate was 46.16 percent. There is an industrial area in the cadastral community of Unter-Oberndorf. The headquarters of the dog magazine Wuff - Das Hundemagazin is located in Maria-Anzbach .

Ten restaurants are run in Maria-Anzbach and there are two accommodation options. In the center there is the municipal office, rectory, three catering establishments, a medical center, kindergarten as well as elementary and music school. In recent years u. a. Bank, post office, Galerie Anzbach and a restaurant in the center will be closed.

Outside the center there are sports facilities, the ÖBB stop and shopping facilities in Maria-Anzbach.

traffic

The market town is located on Neulengbacher Straße B44, near Tullner Straße . The West Autobahn can be easily reached in both directions via St.Christophen , Altlengbach and Pressbaum .

The municipality also has three stops on the Westbahn (Austria) :

• Maria Anzbach stop : Regional-Express between Wien Westbahnhof and St. Pölten Hauptbahnhof and Schnellbahn Wien between Wien Westbahnhof and Neulengbach .
• Hofstatt stop : Schnellbahn Wien between Wien Westbahnhof and Neulengbach .
• Unter Oberndorf stop : Vienna express train between Wien Westbahnhof and Neulengbach .

The active Hutten station is still located between the Unter Oberndorf and Eichgraben stops at km 31.1 , but it does not have a passenger stop . There is only a station building on the tracks.

In 2019, the ÖBB decided that the Hofstatt and Unter Oberndorf stops will be closed from 2025 . Instead, buses will be used every hour in the future. Furthermore, the Maria Anzbach stop will be renovated, barrier-free and provided with a Par & Ride facility.

Leisure and clubs

There is a wide range of leisure activities in the market town. In addition to football, tennis and ice stock sport, there are several horse riding opportunities. Hiking trails and bicycle routes criss-cross the community and the adjacent Vienna Woods .

Since 2017, the new sports hall has offered many indoor opportunities such as climbing, badminton and soccer.
