Walter E. Feichtinger (born November 13, 1956 ) is an Austrian officer , currently a brigadier , of the federal army and political scientist . Since 2002 he has been head of the Institute for Peacekeeping and Conflict Management at the National Defense Academy in Vienna.

Professional background

After graduating from high school in 1975, Feichtinger completed military service with the Austrian Armed Forces as a one-year volunteer at the Realgymnasium in Ried im Innkreis in Upper Austria . From 1976 to 1979 he attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. In 1979 he was retired as a lieutenant and platoon commander at the 13th Panzer Grenadier Battalion in Ried im Innkreis. From 1979 to 1993 he was used as a tank officer and training officer. He completed an apprenticeship as a sports trainer and a management course in middle management in the armed forces. In 1993, with the rank of captain , he became commander of the 10th Panzer Battalion in the Kopal barracks in St. Pölten in Lower Austria.

He studied political science and journalism part-time and graduated in 1998 with a Mag. Phil. He then became deputy head of the Institute for International Peacekeeping at the National Defense Academy (LVAk) in Vienna specializing in the development of the image of war. His doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Vienna in 2001 with the dissertation Armed Forces as an Instrument for Solving Domestic Conflicts. The determining factors of the military conflict picture in Yugoslavia 1998/1999 . In 2001/02 Feichtinger served in the Federal Chancellery during the time of Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel (ÖVP) as a security and defense policy advisor. Since 2002, the career officer has been head of the Institute for Peacekeeping and Conflict Management (IFK) at the National Defense Academy.

Feichtinger is deputy chairman of the "Strategy and Security Policy Advisory Council" (SSB) of the "Science Commission at the Federal Ministry for National Defense and Sport " (BMLVS), a representative nominated by the BMLVS in the "Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for scientific cooperation with departments of the Federal Ministry für Landesverteidigung ”(ÖAW Commission), member of the scientific advisory board for the master’s program in“ Security and Safety Management ”at the University for Continuing Education Krems , where he also works as a lecturer, member of the advisory board for the Austrian security research program KIRAS and member of the program advisory board for political discussions of the European Forum Alpbach . He is also a visiting fellow at the Geneva Center for Security Policy . From 2001 to 2006 he was Secretary General of the Austrian Officers Society . In 2008 he co-founded the International Society of Military Sciences, of which he is a council.

He has published numerous articles, particularly in the areas of conflict research and security policy . Feichtinger is (co-) editor of the academic book series International Security and Conflict Management ( Böhlau Verlag ) and Security and Peace ( Nomos Verlag ) as well as the in-house series IFK-Aktuell (LVAk / BMLVS).

Feichtinger is known to the broader public as an analyst of military connections from radio and television. In this function he became a kind of successor to Brigadier Gerald Karner .

Feichtinger is married and lives with his family in Maria-Anzbach .
