Franz Kernic

Franz Kernic (* 1960 in Vienna ) is an Austrian officer ( colonel ), historian , political scientist and sociologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1978, Kernic joined the Austrian army . He graduated from the Theresian Military Academy (1979–1982) and studied history and political science at the University of Vienna from 1980 to 1985 (Mag. Phil.). From 1982 to 1984 he was stationed with Fliegerregiment 1 of the Austrian Air Force in Langenlebarn. At the end of 1984 he came to the Institute for Military Security Policy at the National Defense Academy in Vienna, where he worked as a senior teaching officer and researcher. In 1987 he was at the University of Vienna with the dissertationThe liberal military policy in the second republic, study on the defense program and policy of the VdU and the FPÖ from 1949 to 1986 (published in the series Military History Dissertations of Austrian Universities ) for Dr. phil. PhD. From 1993 to 1997 he worked at the Institute for Strategic Research.

He also studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the University of Vienna, the University of Philosophy in Munich and the Distance University in Hagen (MA 2000 through Emmanuel Lévinas ). In 2001 he completed his habilitation in political science at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Innsbruck (habilitation thesis: Politics and the military. Approaches to a phenomenological and social scientific critique of military violence ), where he received a university professorship . In 2004 he completed his habilitation in general sociology, with a special focus on military sociology, at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich in Neubiberg, where he became a private lecturer.

Since 2008 he has been Professor of Sociology at the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership at the Swedish Defense School (Försvarshögskolan) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he has been on leave since 2013. Since then he has been a lecturer in leadership and communication at the military academy at the ETH Zurich MILAK in Switzerland. He is also a lecturer at the Department for Business Law and European Integration at the Lower Austrian University for Continuing Education in Krems .

He was u. a. 1998 Visiting Scholar at the Department of Political Science at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, 2000 Visiting Research Fellow at Stanford University in Palo Alto / California, 2004 Visiting Professor and Minister José Ignacio Zenteno Chair in Strategic Studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago and 2005/07/08 visiting scholar in residence and sessional lecturer or visiting professor at the Center for European Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa / Ontario. In 2009 he was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. Further stations led him u. a. to King's College London , the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the European Union Institute for Security Studies in Paris, Northwestern University in Evanston / Illinois and Complutense University Madrid .

His main research interests include a. International relations, peace and conflict research, security policy, military sociology, political theory and sociology, European integration, leadership and communication as well as Latin American studies.
