Sven Bernhard Gareis

Sven Bernhard Gareis (born March 7, 1962 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) is a German political scientist and currently German Deputy Dean at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and honorary professor at the Institute for Political Science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Munster .

Career

After graduating from high school in 1981 in Tutzing near Munich, Gareis joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate in 1981 and studied pedagogy, political science and sociology at the University of the German Armed Forces in Munich . He graduated in 1987 and received his doctorate from Wolfgang Royl in 1989 with the didactics of encounter. Until his retirement from the Bundeswehr in 1994, Gareis was employed as platoon leader , company commander and course director of the telecommunications school of the army .

From 1994 to 2000 Gareis worked as a research assistant and head of the security policy department at the Bundeswehr Academy for Information and Communication (AIK) in Strausberg, after which he was project manager at the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI) until 2006 . In 2006 he moved to the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy (FüAkBw) in Hamburg as Chief Scientific Director in the Human and Social Sciences Department. Gareis has been the German Deputy Dean at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen since 2011. His main research interests are in the areas of international politics , German and European foreign and security policy, the United Nations and foreign relations of the People's Republic of China .

Since 2007, Gareis has been an honorary professor at the Institute for Political Science at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He previously taught at the Technical University of Berlin , at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin and the University of Hamburg and as visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2007, 2009) and the Tamkang University Taipei (2010).

He is a member of the German Association for Political Science , the German Society for Asian Studies , the German Society for the United Nations , the Working Group on the Military and Social Sciences and the Scientific Forum for International Security .

Gareis is colonel of the reserve . He has been doing military training as a reserve attaché since 1998 at the military attaché staffs of the German embassies in Kuala Lumpur, Ottawa and Beijing. In 2002 he attended the National Defense University of the People's Republic of China . From 2004 to 2008 he was a member of the Conseil Scientifique at the Center d`Etudes en Sciences Sociales de la Défense in Paris.
