The ÖOG defines itself as the "security policy conscience of the Republic of Austria " and sees its task, among other things, in " on the one hand as an intermediary between military and security experts and laypeople and on the other hand as the warning conscience for developments that do not coincide with the understanding of the members of the OG cover "to act. The ÖOG also publishes its own magazine, "Der Officer".

Since Austria joined the "Partnership for Peace" (PfP) in 1995, the ÖOG has been a member of the Confédération Interalliée des Officiers de Réserve (CIOR). In 2015, the ÖOG played a key role in the establishment of the " Wehrhaftes Österreich platform , umbrella organization for Austrian military associations".

Conscription and Defense Budget Controversies

In January 2011 there was a conflict between the ÖOG and Defense Minister Norbert Darabos over the planned abolition of compulsory military service and the illegal recall of the chief of staff, General Edmund Entacher . He responded to a request for resignation with a statement at a press conference, in which he equated the meaning of the "club" with that of the SC Croatian Minihof . In May 2011, Christian Segur-Cabanac was first withdrawn from the Ministry of Defense as a liaison person and subsequently the subsidy (most recently 5,500 euros annually) was canceled by the Ministry, while the NCOs continued to receive it. A connection with the conflict was denied by the ministry.

After the referendum on compulsory military service on January 20, 2013, Gerald Klug was sworn in as the new Minister of Defense, with whom the tone normalized again. However, the ÖOG continued to advocate that the constitutional requirements for the Austrian Armed Forces , the goals of the Austrian Security Strategy of July 2013 and the clear majority decision of the population in the referendum on conscription in Austria 2013 are implemented. She therefore criticized the fact that, due to the austerity measures taken in recent years, the armed forces were no longer sufficiently ready, the legally anchored militia system was starved and legal opportunities for recruiting young people (Section 21, Paragraph 3 of the Defense Act) were not used. The "Structural Package ÖBH 2018" presented in October 2014 was therefore heavily criticized. The National Council supported this criticism on November 26th, 2015 with a unanimous motion for a resolution calling on Defense Minister Klug to reconsider his austerity package.

Consequently, the ÖOG demanded that Minister Hans Peter Doskozil , who was sworn in on January 26, 2016, reverse the trend and agreed to support a better budget. The repeated demands and 45,000 signatures in a citizens' initiative against the destruction of the armed forces showed success insofar as it was decided to increase the BH budget by 1.3 billion euros for the years 2016–2020.
