Gerald Karner

Gerald Karner (born April 28, 1955 in Steyr ) is an Austrian officer, military expert and management consultant . Karner worked in the Austrian Armed Forces until 2006 , most recently with the rank of brigadier .

Life

Military background

After graduating from high school , he joined the army . From 1976 to 1979 Karner graduated from the Theresian Military Academy and was then retired from Jagdpanzerbataillon 1 in Wiener Neustadt. There he was platoon commander, S1 / 2/3 and company commander.

From 1985 to 1988 he completed the 11th General Staff Course of the Armed Forces and then came to the Operations and Management Department at the Federal Ministry for National Defense (BMLV) in Vienna. In 1989/90 he was in command of Jagdpanzerbataillon 4 in Graz. From 1993 to 2001 he was editor-in-chief of the Austrian military magazine . He took part in training courses at the Board of Trustees for Journalist Training in Salzburg.

In 1997/98 he studied at the US Army War College , Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. His research project on "The National Security Interests of Austria in a Changing Strategic Environment" was supervised by Colonel Jeffrey D. McCausland . In 1999 he completed the advanced leadership seminar at the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy in Hamburg. In 2001/02 he was part of the project group for the reorganization of the BMLV and the senior leadership of the Austrian Armed Forces. From 2002 Karner headed the Department of Military Strategy in the Ministry of Defense. In 2003/04 he was a member of the Armed Forces Reform Commission and subsequently the Armed Forces Management Project Organization in 2010 to introduce a target structure. In 2006 she was on parental leave .

Business consultant

In 2006 Karner became a partner in the field of strategic planning, leadership and organizational development at Hill Communications GmbH in Vienna. In 2006/07 he was a managing partner . In 2007/08 he was Managing Partner at Hill International based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then worked for an international corporate intelligence company. With the establishment of Aventus GmbH in Vienna in December 2011, Karner took on the position of managing director.

Others

He has been known to the public since 1995 as an interview expert for ORF and other broadcasters. During the Iraq war in 2003 he explained military issues on radio and television. In the course of the discussion leading up to the referendum on conscription in Austria in 2013 , Karner spoke out in favor of introducing a professional army .
