The Annunziatakloster Stein in Furth , municipality of Maria-Anzbach , was the first Austrian settlement of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. The monastery was named after Archduchess Maria Annunziata and is a listed building.

history

The foundation stone of the Am Stein monastery was laid on May 23, 1899. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were founded on August 4, 1898, before construction began on the Annunziatakloster. Meanwhile, they lived in a farmhouse in Unter Oberndorf . The monastery was also a novitiate house , where girls from neighboring countries were also trained and then sent out as missionaries. During the Second World War, a hospital was housed in the monastery .

In 1967 renovation work began and the first wing of a new old people's home was built. In 1970 the second wing with 37 single rooms was completed. Around 100 sisters were employed as nurses or in agriculture around the monastery grounds. In 1958 a jug with silver coins from the 14th / 15th centuries was excavated on the monastery grounds. Century found. It is located in the Lower Austrian State Museum . On June 19, 2010, the 100th anniversary was celebrated and at the end of March 2011 operations were closed.

The monastery was sold to a group of investors in June 2012 for 2.3 million euros. A retreat for the elderly and affordable housing were planned. After the failure of the plans, the area was sold to a Burgenland investment company in 2015. Director Helmut Manninger created the documentary The Great Journey in 2013 about the closure of the monastery . An organic farm with a farm shop has been operated on the monastery area since 2016. In 2017, around 60 asylum seekers were admitted to the monastery.

Building description

Court architect Josef Schmalzhofer had the monastery built in neo-Gothic style in 1899. It was expanded in 1967 and 1970.
