Georg Traar (born July 5, 1899 in Neusach / Weißensee ( Carinthia ); † September 4, 1980 in Purkersdorf ) was an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran youth pastor and superintendent .

Live and act

After obtaining his university entrance qualification, Traar studied Protestant theology . After that, he was in the Vicariate of the Austrian Church AB adopted and after passing the Second Theological exam to the priest ordained . Even as a theology student he felt obliged to work with young people, for whom he set up the “ Crusaders ” association - a forerunner of what would later become the Evangelical Youth Organization . For the first time in 1927, through his initiative as a youth pastor, an " Evangelical Week " was held at the University of Vienna , with which the Protestant students were brought closer to questions of faith in an academic manner. These events organized by the Bildungswerk also reflected the behavior of Austrian Protestantism in the country during the period of the corporate state and the subsequent Nazi period .

From 1926 Traar participated in the Evangelical Alliance in Vienna . In the post-war period he was the leading figure alongside the Baptist preacher Arnold Köster . A lecture given at an alliance meeting is reproduced in detail in the minutes: Traar spoke on March 6, 1944 about “God's rule in the world”.

Already during the Second World War , Traar founded the Evangelical Relief Organization , which performed an important diaconal function even after the liberation from National Socialism . Almost on his own and against all kinds of resistance, he succeeded in rebuilding the Protestant school on Karlsplatz after 1945 .

In 1946, Traar was elected superintendent of the Diocese of Vienna - an office he held for a quarter of a century. He was particularly interested in the press and broadcasting. He was the chairman of the press association until 1977. He also cared about ecumenical relations with other churches, which he actively promoted. In 1961 he took part in the 1st All-Christian Peace Assembly of the Christian Peace Conference in Prague . He welcomed and looked after numerous ecumenical guests, as the greeting on the 50th anniversary of the “ Sweden Mission for Israel ” in Vienna (1972) makes visible.
