Albrecht I (Anhalt)

Albrecht I, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen († 1316 ) was an Ascanian regent in Anhalt .

Life

Albrecht I was a son of Prince Siegfried I of Anhalt-Köthen and his wife Katharina of Sweden. He followed his father in the Köthen area, which at that time also included the areas around Dessau and Zerbst. A part of the city of Zerbst , which was still in the hands of the Margraves of Brandenburg , he received as a fief. Prince Albrecht I was the first Ascanian to move into Köthen Castle in 1295 .

Together with Abbot Konrad von Nienburg , he abolished in 1293 the use of the Wendish language, which had been in use until then, in the Anhalt courts. He took part in the siege of Herlingsberg Castle (1291) against Heinrich the Wonderful von Grubenhagen . After King Albrecht I was murdered , his brother-in-law, Margrave Waldemar von Brandenburg , unsuccessfully proposed him as German king. Significant donations come from him, which according to a number of documents he made to churches and monasteries. He was married twice, to Liutgart von Holstein , daughter of Gerhard I , and his second marriage to Agnes, the daughter of Margrave Konrad von Brandenburg , and died in 1316.

His successors were his sons Albrecht II and Waldemar I.
