Siegfried I (Anhalt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried I, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen (* around 1230 ; † after March 25, 1298 in Köthen ) was a ruling Anhalt sovereign from the Askanians . He ruled from 1252 to 1298.

Siegfried I was the third son of Heinrich I , Prince of Anhalt , and Irmingard of Thuringia . When Heinrich I died, the principality was divided among his sons Heinrich II “the fat one” ( Anhalt-Aschersleben ), Bernhard I ( Anhalt-Bernburg ) and Siegfried ( Anhalt-Köthen ).

After the death of the last Ludowingian Landgrave Heinrich Raspe , Siegfried occupied the Palatinate during the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession , for which he raised inheritance claims as Irmingard's son. He later renounced the landgraviate to the Wettins , from whom he received compensation. In 1273 Siegfried was one of the candidates for the royal election that Rudolf von Habsburg won.

Siegfried was married to Katharina Birgersdottir of Sweden (1245–1289), a daughter of Birger Jarl . Their son, Albrecht I , succeeded Siegfried after Siegfried's death.
