Johann I (Mecklenburg)
Johann I, Lord of Mecklenburg , called the theologian (* around 1211 ; † August 1, 1264 ) was Prince of Mecklenburg from 1234 to 1264 .
Life
He was the eldest son of Heinrich Borwin II.
Together with his brothers, he administered Mecklenburg until 1234. After the division of the country , he was awarded the ancestral home of Mecklenburg as the oldest son. In 1227 he was able to free Mecklenburg from Danish fiefdom through the battle of Bornhöved . However, the country soon came under Saxon and Holstein fiefdom claims, which led to the war against Sachsen-Lauenburg and Schauenburg-Holstein . Johann I succeeded in winning parts of the state of Parchim-Richenberg , including Sternberg , from his brother Pribislaw I in competition with the diocese and county of Schwerin . He promoted the church and the German settlement of Mecklenburg. In 1262 he formed an alliance with the Guelphs against Denmark .
He was buried in Doberan .
Marriage and offspring
Johann I was married to Luitgart von Henneberg, daughter of Count Poppo VII von Henneberg . He had the following children with her:

- Albrecht I (Mecklenburg) , co-regent from 1264/1265
- Hermann, Canon of Schwerin
- Elisabeth, married to Gerhard I. (Holstein-Itzehoe)
- Nicholas III , Canon in Lübeck, was co-regent from 1275 to 1283
- Poppo, before 1264
- Johann II , co-regent from 1264 to 1283
