Prince Heinrich I, Lord of Mecklenburg , called "the Pilgrim" (* around 1230; † January 2, 1302 ) was ruler of Mecklenburg from 1264 to 1275 and from 1299 to 1302 .

Origin and family

He was the eldest son of Prince Johann I. At the beginning he ruled together with his brother Albrecht I. However, he died in 1265. Around 1259 he married Anastasia (* approx. 1245; † March 15, 1317), daughter of Duke Barnim I. from Pomerania .

Life

In 1266 he subordinated himself to the Jews in Wismar as a chamberlain in return for protection money . In the same year he donated the wine for 20 churches in the state of Ilow , which from then on received mass wine and wafers from the stocks of the Ratskeller in Wismar . For many churches in the region this is their first documentary mention. In 1270 he undertook a crusade against the not yet Christianized Lithuanians and in 1271 a pilgrimage to the Holy Land . On the way there, however, he was abducted to Cairo and remained in Arab captivity for 27 years. During this time, after disputes between his brothers and cousins about the guardianship of his children and thus about the reign, the rule of his brothers Nicholas III. (until 1290) and Johann II (until 1283) ruled until Heinrich II took power. In 1298 Heinrich I returned to Mecklenburg via Morea and Rome . The Lübeck Council Secretary Alexander Huno reported on it. Shortly before his death, he took over government responsibility from 1299 to 1302, probably no longer active. Heinrich I was buried in the princely crypt of the Doberan Minster .
