Life

Tomb of Theresa of Portugal in the Convent of Lorvão (1715)

Theresa was born in Coimbra around 1178 as the eldest daughter of King Sancho I of Portugal and Dulce of Barcelona .

She married Alfonso IX in 1191. from León and had three children with him. Pope Celestine III had this marriage declared null and void in 1197 because they were too closely related, because the two had Alfonso I of Portugal as their grandfather. Theresa then withdrew to Portugal .

After the death of Alfonso IX, she tried in vain. in 1230 her two daughters claim to the throne in León. King Ferdinand II of Castile , son of Alfonso's second and also divorced wife Berenguela of Castile , replaced his half-sisters' claims to the throne with 30,000 gold pieces ( aurei ). From her morning gift , Theresa built a Cistercian convent , which her daughters entered. She herself lived from 1229 in the monastery of the Cistercian Sisters in Lorvão , where her grave is also in the monastery church.

On December 13, 1705, Theresa was from Pope Clement XI. beatified together with her sister Sancha . Her Catholic holiday is June 17th.
