Malveira is a Portuguese parish ( Freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Mafra .

history

There are no secure documents about the origin of Malveira. During excavations in the 18th century, coins with images of the emperor Arcadius (377 - 408), son of Theodosius I, were found . Remains of tombs and other buildings from the time of the Roman occupation came to light. Further excavations and research in the 19th century produced traces of settlement since the middle of the 15th century. From the documents of the time it appears that the current municipality of King D. Afonso Henriques was given to the brothers Guilherme de Licorne and Roberto de Licorne, for their services in the siege of Lisbon and the conquest of Lisbon by the Moors in 1147. The Ur - Roberto de Licorne's granddaughter, Catarina Domingues, married João Froes, a member of the León royal family . Among their five children was Gracia, whose traditional beauty the King D. Dinis fell for. From their illegitimate relationship arose Pedro Affonso (also Pedro Afonso, buried in Tarouca Monastery ), who received the title Conde de Barcelos (German: Count of Barcelos) from his father . Among the possessions that the family was able to bequeath was the area of the municipality of São Miguel de Alcainça , in particular the Casaes da Costa da Malveira , from which the name of the present-day municipality is derived. The place was officially mentioned for the first time in 1363, as Casal da Malveira , in the will of Prior Vicente Annes Fróis, a cousin of Pedro Affonsos.

Located on the road from Lisbon to Torres Vedras and the Palácio Nacional de Mafra , the community of S. Miguel de Alcainça grew in importance . The area became an important source of food for the capital. Queen Maria I therefore approved a market in Malveira for the first time on December 14, 1782, which has since taken place weekly on Thursdays.

During the Napoleonic invasions, Malveira was part of the Linhas de Torres Vedras , a line of fortifications built by General Soult consisting of 152 different fortifications against the Portuguese-British army.

The place became a stop on the Linha do Oeste railway line opened in 1887 . Until May 28, 1923 Malveira belonged to the municipality (Freguesia) S. Miguel de Alcainça , to form an independent municipality since then. In 1985 Malveira was raised to the rank of Vila (small town).
