Caniçal is a municipality in the district of Machico in the northeast of Madeira . On June 30, 2011 Caniçal had 3924 inhabitants in an area of 11.9 km².

history

The area of the eastern tip of Madeira was given to Vasco Moniz as a fief . The first settlement that arose there was the origin of today's place. When it was mentioned in Moniz's will, the place was first mentioned on September 5, 1489. Due to the difficult connection routes to Machico , a first chapel was inaugurated here in 1527 with the Capelinha do Caniçal . Caniçal has been a separate municipality since 1561. It was based in the newly built church of Capela de São Sebastião , which was sacked by corsairs in 1594 and after its restoration fell victim to the 1748 earthquake. Additional chapels were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. From the 18th century, the settlement shifted to the west, where the present church was built in 1749. The ongoing pirate attacks caused the Marquês de Pombal to build a port with military facilities nearby.

In 1867, work began on the lighthouse ( Farol da Ponta de São Lourenço ), which, when it opened in 1870, made navigation on the dangerous rocky coast safer. In October 1845, the Forerunner sank here .

In 1909 the municipal administration built a small quay . In 1931 700 Portuguese soldiers landed there to take over the radio station of the Companhia Portuguesa Rádio Marconi , which was built in Alagoa in 1926 and was occupied by insurgents.

In 1942 the whaling company Empresa Baleeira do Arquipélago da Madeira settled in Cancela. This brought the poor region an initial economic upswing, which, however, only began significantly with the subsequent opening of the 16 km long Machico-Caniçal aquaduct, with the subsequent irrigation of the soil. The construction of the road tunnel in the 1960s ended the community's relative isolation. The state post office CTT subsequently set up an office here, the whaling museum ('' Museu da Baleia '') and, most recently, the establishment of the free trade zone '' Zona Franca Industrial '' were further moments of development.

In 1994 Caniçal was elevated to Vila (small town).

Culture, sports and sights

In addition to various cultural associations, the CF Caniçal football club is particularly important in the community. He plays in the IIª Divisão , the third Portuguese football league.

In the adjacent nature reserve of the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula , hiking trails and nature trails have been created.

The 1749 newly built, the St. Sebastian church dedicated Igreja de São Sebastião , which goes back to an earlier chapel dating from the 16th century, characterized by its mannerist of design elements. It has an ornate wooden ceiling and various altarpieces from the 18th century. The two 37 cm high figures from the 18th century are rather poorly preserved. The church has been a listed building since 2001.

economy

The tuna fishing is still practiced, but has lost its importance. In the Zona Franca do Caniçal ( Caniçal Free Trade Zone) there is industry, where u. a. Cosmetics are made from aloe vera and innovative Madeira embroidery . However, the free trade area gets its importance more from trade between the EU and third countries, and even more from the port of Caniçal , through which all of Madeira's freight traffic is handled. Electricity is produced in smaller wind farms on the peninsula.
