Porto da Cruz ([ˈpoɾtu dɐ ˈkɾuʃ] dt. Port of the Cross) is a municipality in the district of Machico in the northeast of Madeira . On June 30, 2011 Porto da Cruz had 2597 inhabitants in an area of 25.2 km².

Location description
In the small central square of the village there are several small shops, a pharmacy and a taxi stand next to the church. In addition to the municipal administration, the core town (Casas Próximas) also has a primary school, a large sports hall, the community center, the local health center and a home for the elderly. A good gastronomic supply is given by two smaller hotels and further private quarters as well as several restaurants and bars.
Porto da Cruz is regularly served by local buses to and from the island's capital Funchal and the island's airport .
Attractions
Sugar cane factory
The sugar cane factory founded in 1927 still produces using the same process as when it was founded. A striking feature is the 26 m high tower, whose steam, visible from afar, draws attention to the sweet production of rum and honey molasses.
Lido and seawater swimming pool
In 2004, the 'Praia da Alagoa' bathing complex, a lido with modern facilities, was opened. The black sand beach is also popular with surfers as a start into the waves. Swimming is usually only possible there when the sea is calm and the tide is low. In addition, there is a seawater swimming pool at one end of the town's small beach promenade, which is operated in the tourist season. Since it is located in a pool completely separated from the sea, bathing is actually always possible there during the season. Breakers can only slosh into the basin when the waves are high.
Eagle rock
About 1 km northwest of Porto da Cruz is the Eagle Rock , in Portuguese Penha de Aguia , a well-known mountain in Madeira.

Viticulture
Porto da Cruz is famous for its 'Vinho seco americano'. This dry red wine is made from the grape variety 'Americana'. In September every year the big wine festival 'Festa do Vinho' takes place to celebrate the grape harvest.
