The port of Caniçal is a seaport of the municipality of Caniçal on the east coast of Madeira , through which all freight traffic of the Madeira archipelago has been handled since 2007 . At the same time it is an important fishing port .

history

Caniçal in the east of Madeira is a structurally weak region in which only agriculture and fishing were practiced for a long time . The first reports on the construction of a harbor date from the 18th century, although it was not until 1909 that the community created a small quay . To promote the free trade area ( Zona Franca da Madeira ) founded in 1987, construction of the port through which the products of the free trade area were to be shipped began in 1994.

In the course of the following years, the port's area of responsibility was expanded: The port of Funchal reached its capacity limits, so that the regional government decided in 2004 to use the port of Funchal exclusively for passenger traffic and to relocate freight traffic to Caniçal. It pushed the further expansion of the port of Caniçal with the support of the Cohesion Fund of the European Union. Since the completion of the expansion in 2006, containers , general cargo , bulk goods and vehicles can be loaded in the port via a RoRo terminal . In 2007, the port completely took over the freight traffic that had been handled via the port of Funchal up to then. This makes it the only shipping port on the island through which all necessary goods are imported to the island. In terms of the number of ships handled, it is the third largest port in the Autonomous Region of Madeira after the port of Funchal and the port of Porto Santo .

Capacities and equipment

The port has a northern and a southern terminal with three piers . The northern, landside pier is 420 meters long and suitable for ships with a draft of up to 8.0 meters. Up to three container ships or bulk carriers with a maximum length of 120 meters can be loaded and unloaded at the same time. The pier on the east side of the harbor basin is also counted as part of the northern terminal ; which is equipped with a passenger terminal and a terminal for RoRo ships . The southern jetty , 271 meters long and suitable for ships up to 11.0 meters deep , has the capacity for two bulk carriers of up to 130 meters in length. The 80 meter long protective pier on the west side is reserved for fishing boats. Adjacent to this is a small dry dock for boats of up to 300 tons.

The port is equipped with three tugs with 3300 HP each and has three mobile cranes, each with a load capacity of 64 tons . There are also reach stackers (container forklifts ) and the usual forklifts , company vehicles , etc.

Ship movements and handling volumes

According to the figures presented by the port operator APRAM, the usage figures of the ports in the Madeira archipelago have remained relatively constant over the years. According to the figures available for 2017 on ship movements in Madeira's ports, a total of 659 ships and 397 yachts docked in Funchal, 368 ships and 784 yachts in Porto Santo and 231 ships and no yachts in Caniçal. The total number is to be divided into passenger ships, cargo ships, marine vehicles and other ships as well as yachts:

Marine vehicles 21st 9 1
Others 10 0 4th
