María Eugenia Rodríguez Palop (born March 9, 1970 in Llerena , Badajoz Province ) is a Spanish lawyer, legal philosopher and politician. The independent politician has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2019 European elections as part of the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left .

Life

Rodríguez was born on March 9, 1970 as one of three daughters in Llerena in the province of Badajoz . After completing school, she studied law at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas , graduating in 1993. She then completed her doctorate at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid until 2000 . Furthermore, she worked as a lecturer at both universities, first at the UPC Faculty of Law between 1998 and 2004, and at UC3M since 2005, as a full professor of legal philosophy.

Rodríguez is a researcher at the Instituto de Estudios de Género and at the Instituto de Derechos Humanos Bartolomé de las Casas at UC3M, of which she was also deputy director until 2018. She is also responsible for international relations at the institute, where she also held the UNESCO Chair in Violence and Human Rights: Government and Governance, and the Antonio Beristain Chair in Studies on Terrorism and its Victims. Rodríguez was one of 60 scholars who signed a manifesto for reforming the Spanish constitution in June 2018.

In March 2019, the Podemos politician Pablo Bustinduy , who had previously won the internal primaries for the top candidate for the European elections, renounced the top candidate for the electoral alliance " Unidas Podemos cambiar Europa" from Podemos and Izquierda Unida. The electoral alliance then elected the non-party Rodríguez Palop as the top candidate. The list connection won almost 10 percent in the election and thus 6 of the 54 Spanish mandates, so Rodríguez moved in directly. She joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For her group she is a member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality , of which she was elected Vice-Chair. She is also a deputy member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee .
