Avanca is a small town and a municipality in Portugal .

history

The place was first officially documented in 1046. On March 14, 1973 Avanca was elevated to Vila ("small town").

Sights and culture

Here was Egaz Moniz born. He received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949 . In the house where he was born, the Casa-Museu Egaz Moniz has been set up, in which both his private art collection (antique porcelain and glass, painting, carpet art, etc.) as well as scientific and medical exhibits relating to his work can be seen.

One of the international film festivals in Portugal takes place in the village with the annual Festival Avanca .

Once a year in summer, the gastronomic festival week Festival da Gastronomia das Colectividades de Avanca takes place, organized by various sports and cultural associations in the area.

In 2011, the Campeonato Nacional de 1/8 TT was held for the second time in Avanca , the national championship of a model car racing type.

The annual saints festivals are Santa Marinha on July 18th, Sto. António on August 13th, Santa Luzia on December 13th, and S. Sebastião on January 21st.

Avanca is connected to the nearby water landscape of the Ria de Aveiro , which is known for its diverse biodiversity, via the Ribeira do Mourão River .
