Freixo de Numão is a town and municipality in northern Portugal . As Fraxinum, it was probably a regionally important Roman city. A large number of archaeological sites from different epochs are located in the municipality.

history

At the Numão Castle archaeological site

The excavations, which have been intensified since 1980, prove a prehistoric settlement. During the Copper Age, there was a two-row fortified settlement with around 40 people. Presumably it was abandoned later, before about 2000 BC. BC once again people settled here permanently. Ceramic finds show the existence of a living Bronze Age village, while tools and other finds suggest a relatively important Iron Age village. There were also a number of villages in the area at the time. After the Roman conquest of the fortified settlement of the Castro culture , it was built here from the first century BC. Apparently a civitas , but further excavations are necessary to assess the size and importance of the Roman settlement at that time. The finds so far show a variety of buildings from simple houses to villas , Roman mines, and facilities for viticulture and olive oil production . The Roman city of Fraxinum is believed to be here.

The Germanic peoples who broke in from the early 5th century AD do not seem to have settled here. There is no archaeological or topological evidence of the Suebi or Visigoths . Even the subsequent conquest by the Arabs from 711 left no traces here. It was only in connection with the Reconquista that Numão and the castle that had been built in the meantime came to life again in the 12th century. On March 12, 1372 Freixo de Numão was raised to Vila (small town with administrative rights). At the beginning of the 16th century, the town's population grew significantly, in particular due to the influx of Jews who fled to Portugal from Spain before the Inquisition . The place around the Numão Castle thus attained comparable importance from its Roman times. In the plain below the castle, Freixo de Numão became a growing place. In 1583 this was made subject to the University of Coimbra , and in 1601 it already had its own court, but the official seat of jurisdiction was only moved from Numão to Freixo in the 17th century.

Population development of the municipality of Freixo de Numão 1864–2011

In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg , the administrative district of Freixo de Numão grew significantly in 1836 through the incorporation of dissolved neighboring districts. It now consisted of 11 parishes. On December 31, 1853, however, the district of Freixo de Numão was dissolved and incorporated into the district of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. As a result, the further growth of the place was slowed down, and since then it has only developed in line with general progress.
