São Pedro de Rates , or Rates for short , is a place and a municipality in northern Portugal .
It is the largest and most sparsely populated municipality in the Póvoa de Varzim district . It is traditionally considered to be particularly important, especially as part of the historic Portuguese Way of St. James , the Caminho Português .
history
Henry of Burgundy , the first count of Portugal, founded a new monastery here around 1100 on the basis of a simpler, already existing monastery. it gained some importance and the town council developed in the shadow of the monastery.
After the Council's monastery fell into disrepair in 1515, it was dissolved by King D. Manuel and given to the Order of Christ . As a result, the place experienced an upswing. Tomé de Sousa , member of the order and son of the place (later first Governor General of Brazil), became the first master of the lands of the council. In 1517 the king renewed the town charter of the council after he had come through here on his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and had the later main church of the community built.
In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the district council was dissolved in 1836 and the status of a vila (German: small town ) was revoked, but was granted again on July 2, 1993 under the name of São Pedro de Rates .
