history

Dunes on the beach of Estela

The first document in which King D. Afonso Henriques referred to himself as King of the independent Kingdom of Portugal for the first time is the letter with which the regent gave the parishes of Estela to the monks of the monastery of S. Martinho de Tibães in Braga ( Sancta Maria de Stella ) and Vila Mendo ( Villam Menendi ) awards .

In the royal registers of 1220, the parish is recorded as Santa Maria de Estela or Sancta Maria de Stela .

Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , Amorim was a municipality in the district of Barcelos , to be affiliated with Vila do Conde in 1852 . Since 1878 the municipality belongs to Póvoa de Varzim.

In the second half of the 19th century, the place also benefited from the local boom, when the reclamation of part of the dunes around Póvoa de Varzim greatly expanded the agricultural area and enabled productive agriculture from now on. More recently, tourism has contributed to the development. The local dune beaches and the golf course in the municipality are particularly attractive.
