Peter von Rates (also: Peter von Braga , Portuguese : São Pedro de Rates ; † allegedly around 60, actually probably 5th or 6th century in Braga ) is considered the first bishop of Braga .

Legend has it that the work of Peter von Rat is associated with the apostle Jacob ( Santiago ), who is particularly venerated in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula - his relics are venerated in Santiago de Compostela ; In fact, the earliest mention of Jacob's activity on the Iberian Peninsula dates from around 600. Peter von Rates is said to have been a local Christian who was met by Jacob in 44 during a visit to the Serra de Rates in today's Póvoa de Varzim had been appointed bishop for the nearby city of Braga. There he was then executed around the year 60 for his Christian faith.

The discovery of the bones of the saint in the 9th century is attributed to the fisherman and later hermit Felix from Villa Mendo, who noticed a glow one night on today's hill of São Felix and then stumbled upon the bones. The council monastery is said to have been built on this site , which housed the relics until 1552 before they were transferred to Braga Cathedral . It can be assumed that Peter von Rates is a person of the 5th or 6th century who was subsequently dated earlier in order to give the Archdiocese of Braga a more venerable age and a direct connection to the Apostle Jacob. The feast day of Saint Peter of the Council is April 26th .
