Praia de Mira is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Mira . It has 3,147 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
geography
Praia de Mira (dt .: Beach of Mira) is located on the Atlantic Ocean and a lagoon downstream . It is the seaside resort of the district, from whose district capital Mira it is 7 km away.
history
Praia de Mira has been mentioned as a permanent residence for local fishermen since 1812. By the 1960s, largely all of the original, traditional wooden structures ( Palheiros ) had given way to today's stone houses, except for the chapel and the current museum of the place.
Culture and sights
The place is known for its long sandy beach, which is awarded the Blue Flag every year , which has so far only largely had regional significance and has therefore been spared from mass tourism, and offers mostly quiet operation with a tourist infrastructure (including cafes, hotels, restaurants, campsites) . However, in the long term it is threatened by erosion by the sea.
In the community's cultural center, the Centro Cultural da Praia de Mira , various cultural events and exhibitions take place all year round, as well as information and discussion events on local and regional problems, such as environmental issues.
The Museu Etnográfico da Praia de Mira (German: Ethnographic Museum of Praia de Mira) reminds with its exhibits of the fishermen and the local manual fishing, the importance of which has declined sharply. The local tourist information (port .: Turismo) is also housed here.
The church of Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Eng .: Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception) with its gold-plated crosses, built in 1843 , was renovated in 1884, after partial destruction by a storm, and is a listed building.
