Ronfe is a small town in northern Portugal .
history
The place name goes back to the incursion of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, based on the name Ranulfus, possibly an eponymous landowner. In the 8th century the place name had taken the form Rauffi . The place was officially mentioned for the first time in 1033 in a document on the district “Villa Belmit”, which consisted of Ronfe and Vermil. Since the 14th century the county was called Couto de Ronfe .
Until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , Ronfe remained the seat of the small district, consisting of the municipalities of Ronfe, Vermil , and part of the municipality of Mogege . The district council consisted of twelve councilors, a public prosecutor or government representative, and a judge, who was also mayor. Ronfe was subordinate to Guimarães administratively and Braga militarily.
In 1834 the former district ( Couto ) was dissolved by Ronfe and incorporated as a municipality into the district of Guimarães.
In 1999, Ronfe was elevated to Vila (German: small town ).
administration
Ronfe is the seat of the homonymous municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Guimarães in the Braga district . The municipality has an area of 5 km² and has 4462 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
The community consists only of the small town of Ronfe and a few small country estates, mostly wineries.
economy
The most important employers in the municipality are the industrial companies, especially the textile companies located here. The traditionally important agriculture has lost much of its importance, there are still a few wineries to be mentioned . The cultivation of fruit and vegetables only plays a sideline, albeit subordinate.
