Avelar is a municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Ansião . It has 2,169 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The Roman road from Conimbriga to Sellium (today's Tomar ) led through today's municipality of Avelar.
The present place was first mentioned in 1137. King Manuel I granted Avelar town rights in 1514 and elevated the place to a vila. In 1836 the place lost this status and was incorporated into the district of Figueiró dos Vinhos . Avelar has belonged to the Ansião district since 1895.
In 1995 the place was raised again to today's Vila (small town).
Culture and sights
In the municipal area are the communal furnace built in 1712, the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Avelar (also Igreja do Espírito Santo ) from the 18th century, and the stake ( Pelourinho ), with which the city charter granted in 1514 was indicated.
