The place was redesigned in 1921 as a health resort mainly for tuberculosis sufferers and was the first place in Portugal outside the metropolitan areas with electricity, water and sewerage. Since the disease disappeared, the place has been a destination especially for those seeking relaxation and friends of vintage automobiles and art. The multi-award-winning 4-star Hotel do Caramulo , which is one of the numerous local monuments , was created from one of its 19 sanatoriums . Also worth seeing are the cobbled Roman streets , the Romanesque church and the stake. The 8 hiking trails attract a million visitors every year.

The " Museu do Caramulo " houses u. a. an important European classic car museum (100 vehicles, from the Benz built in 1886 to the Ferrari 456) and an art collection comprising 500 exhibits with works by Picasso, Dalí, Léger, Chagall and other great masters. The museum, which opened in 1959 and has welcomed well over a million visitors in its more than 50 years, is located in the midst of lush greens and with sweeping views.
