Cabanas de Viriato is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Carregal do Sal . It has 1533 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885–1954) was born and raised here before he saved tens of thousands from the Holocaust as consul in Bordeaux .

geography

Cabanas de Viriato is located in the mountainous hinterland of central Portugal, between the Serra do Caramulo and the Serra da Estrela . It is about ten kilometers from the southwestern district town of Carregal do Sal and about 30 kilometers from the district capital Viseu to the north .

history

Finds of grave sites show human settlement in the municipality until the 4th millennium BC.

On the initiative u. a. From César de Sousa Mendes , twin brother of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and minister under the Salazar regime, the place, which was previously only called Cabanas (German: huts), was given the official name addition de Viriato (German: des Viriathus). Culture, sports and sights

In addition to two churches and another mansion , the Casa do Passal is a mansion from the 19th century in the village under monument protection. This is now also known as Casa do Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes (German: House of Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes) and is the goal of various initiatives to further upgrade the building and the associated memory of its most famous inhabitant.

In the municipality there is the Monumento Megalítico de Cabanas de Viriato (German: Megalithic Monument of Cabanas de Viriato) an archaeological excavation site, in which u. a. Remains of dolmens and a tumulus have been found.

The traditional carnival celebrations in Cabanas, annually in February, are also known nationwide.

Founded in 1872, the Sociedade Filarmónica de Cabanas de Viriato musical association is an important cultural engine of the municipality, in particular through its music school, theater group, choir, folk dance groups and modern dance groups. In addition, sports clubs and a hunting and fishing association are active in the village, as is a volunteer fire brigade .
