history

The community was founded in 1555 as São Sebastião de Cernache do Bonjardim . The place was long considered one of the largest villages in Portugal until it was elevated to a small town (Vila) on August 20, 1995 .

Cernache do Bonjardim is the seat of a municipality of the same name ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Sertã in the Castelo Branco district . It has 3,055 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The longstanding chairman of the local council (Presidente da Junta de Freguesia) is Diamantino Calado Pina (1997–2001, 2005–2009, 2013–2017).

The football club Grupo Desportivo Vitória de Sernache , founded in 1948, plays its home games in the Estádio Municipal Nuno Álveres Pereira, a municipal stadium with a capacity of 4,500 . The first men's team played in the 2012/13 season in the top division of the Castelo Branco district. Men's and women's futsal are also important to the club.

As the birthplace of the saint and national hero Nuno Álvares Pereira (1360–1431), the parish is a famous pilgrimage site in Portugal. The Jesuit Bishop Clemens Joseph Colaco Leitao (1704–1776) and the journalist and author Pedro Rosa Mendes (* 1968) were also born there.
