history

São Martinho Church

The original place São Martinho is very old, already existed in Roman times.

After 711 the area fell to the Moors , but the Christians succeeded in conquering during the Reconquista under the leadership of King Ramiro II of León . Since this area belonged to the former military defense ring of the Moors, which reached far beyond Lamego to Spain, the surname of the place was already supplemented by the addition of de Mouros (the Moors).

However, it is not known when the place received city rights.

Districts

The following villages are now part of the municipal administration of São Martinho de Mouros: Santa Eulália, Silva, Cardoso, Peneda, Pontinha and Vila-Verde.
