history

Antas and other finds prove a settlement back to the Paleolithic . The Romans maintained a settlement here. A dam to supply water to Olisipos (now Lisbon ) has been preserved from this period. After it became part of the Visigoth Empire , the Moors took Belas around 711 .

During the Reconquista , Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , conquered the area. He gave Belas as a thank you for his services in the successful siege of Lisbon in 1147 to Robert Lacorne. In the following centuries, noble families built various mansions here. The Lisbon earthquake in 1755 caused extensive damage in Belas.

At the Roman dam (Portuguese Barragem romana )

Belas was the seat of an independent district until 1855 , and has since belonged to the Sintra district.
