Amareleja is a Vila (small town) and a municipality of Freguesia in Portugal in the district of Moura , with an area of ​​108.6 km² and 2564 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 23.6 inhabitants per km².

Amareleja is located near the Alqueva reservoir , the Ardila river and the Noudar Castle. The focus is on agriculture with viticulture, sheep cheese and breeding black pigs . The largest solar power plant in Portugal is located in the municipality of Amarelja.

history

In the municipality of Amareleja there are many prehistoric places of worship ( Antas ) that can be traced back to the Celtic times.

On April 1, 1695, the place of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Mareleja was first mentioned in a document. The Amareleja clock tower dates back to 1793. In the Valtamujo valley there are remains of a Roman bridge and other remains on the banks of the Rio Ardila.

On August 16, 1991, Amareleja was elevated to vila (small town).

In 2003 Amareleja recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in Portugal at 47.4 degrees.

economy

At the end of 2008 , Europe's largest solar power plant (central foto-voltaica) opened in Amareleja with 46  MWp . 93 million kWh are produced here every year.
