Eunice do Carmo Muñoz (born July 30, 1928 in Amareleja ) is a Portuguese actress .

Eunice Muñoz

Life

Her family ran a touring theater in the Ribatejo and Alentejo , so she was on stage for the first time at the age of five. At the age of eleven, she moved with her parents to Lisbon, where she got her first engagement two years later at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (1941 in Vendaval by Virgínia Vitorino). While she was studying theater at the National Conservatory, she continued to play theater. Before she turned 18, she had her first notable film role in José Leitão de Barros ' film about Portugal's national poet Luís de Camões . For this she received the award for "Best Actress" of 1946 in Portugal.

In addition to an appearance in the popular revue theater of the time (in Ninotschka , at the side of Vasco Santana ), she continued to play theater, a. a. in pieces by Júlio Dantas , Molière , and Gil Vicente . In 1952 she withdrew from the theater and took a job as a saleswoman. In 1955 she returned to the stage in the play Joana d'Arc ( Jeanne or The Lark , by Jean Anouilh ) at the Teatro Avenida . Her portrayal of Jeanne d'Arc is considered by critics to be a high point of her career. Further appearances at the Teatro Avenida followed until 1959 .

In the 1960s to 1970s, in addition to serious roles, she also appeared on stage for the boulevard theater. She also played in a few films without attaining an attention comparable to her theater roles. At the newly founded Teatro Villaret , by Raul Solnado , she received the highest fee ever paid to an actress (in Portugal) of 30,000 escudos per month . With José de Castro , she founded her own theater group in 1970 ( Companhia Somos Dois , "Compagnie Wir sind zu zwei"), with which she undertook extensive guest tours in the Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique . After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 she paused before joining the newly founded ensemble of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in 1978 . Apart from an appearance at the Teatro Cornucópia (in Der Park , by Botho Strauss ), she only played there in the following years. For her role in the film Sunken Morning (1980) she received film criticism for the first time.

In the early 1990s she was honored several times, for example the Gold Medal of Honor of the City of Lisbon, the State Medal of Merit for Culture and an exhibition dedicated to her in the Theater Museum. In the following years she received wide attention, both for her recitations (including two works by Fernando Arrabal , 1997 in the Centro Cultural de Belém ), as well as for her numerous roles in pieces by Lídia Jorge , Jean-Paul Sartre , and Agustina Bessa-Luís and Athol Fugard . Her appearances in the film were rare and of no great significance. She now increasingly turned to television and, to the surprise of critics, took on numerous roles in telenovelas .

Today Eunice Muñoz is considered one of the most important actresses in the country. The city of Oeiras named the municipal event center after her and in 2008 she received the Globo de Ouro for her life's work. For her 70th anniversary on stage, it was by President Aníbal Cavaco Silva , at the premiere of the broadcast and televised piece O Cerco a Leningrado ( "The encirclement of Leningrad," by José Sanchis Sinisterra ), with the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique awarded .
