Alfredo Ricardo Rezende Tropa (born March 29, 1939 in Porto ; † July 5, 2020 ) was a Portuguese film director .

Live and act

Tropa studied at the University of Coimbra from 1958 and then moved to Paris , where he obtained his diploma at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in 1963. As an assistant director he worked on films such as Uma Abelha na Chuva ("A Bee in the Rain") by Fernando Lopes ; from 1968 he worked for the state television broadcaster RTP . His work with Michel Giacometti on the documentary television series O Povo que canta ("Singing People") stood out.

After a whole series of short films (16 films between 1960 and 1970 alone) he made his first full-length film in 1970/71, Pedro Só (Eng: "Nur Peter"); the black and white film was released in 1972. The film received the attention and overwhelming benevolence of critics.

With his second full-length film Bárbara (published in 1980), again with music by Manuel Freire, he then fell through with critics and audiences alike; it was his last feature film. Since then he has mainly produced documentaries for television again.

Tropa was a co-founder of the first Portuguese film collective, the Centro Português de Cinema , a decisive impetus for the new Portuguese film (see: Novo Cinema ). He was married to the director Teresa Olga.
