Caranguejeira is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Leiria . It has a population of 4691 (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The parish was created in the 16th century by splitting off from the parish of Espite . In 2001 the place was elevated to a vila (small town).

Culture and sights

In addition to the primary school, a stone cross and the Ermida de São Bartolomeu chapel , the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Caranguejeira (also Igreja de São Cristóvão ), built in the 18th century, is one of the parish's architectural monuments.
