Unhais da Serra is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese county of Covilhã . 1398 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

First mentioned in the current location in the city rights certificate, became king Sancho I the place Covilha in 1186 awarded. In 1758 the place became an independent municipality. Since the end of the 19th century, the place with thermal baths experienced a boom as a glamorous travel destination, with the opening of the Grande Hotel with casino. This development was made possible primarily by the emerging textile industry in the region and its now wealthy industrialists. On July 11, 1985, the place was raised to Vila (small town).

Culture, sports and sights

The 37 ° warm and richly bubbling medicinal springs with 36,000 liters per hour, and the nature of the Serra da Estrela are the main tourist attractions of the place. Due to its location in the Serra da Estrela, surrounded by almost untouched nature, it has become a place for health tourism , but hikers, various water sports enthusiasts and climbers can also find activities here.
