Quinta do Conde is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Sesimbra . It has 4,762 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The origin of the place lies in an estate ( port. Quinta ) of the count (port. Conde ) Atouguia. The place name has been in use since the 18th century.
The estate as the origin of today's place goes back to the first, documented acquisition of land by the Lisbon monastery of São Vicente de Fora in 1224 in today's municipality. In 1573 Álvaro Gonçalves de Ataíde took over the local lands of the monastery from the house of Atouguia as a lease area. The last Count Atougia, Jerónimo de Ataíde, was accused and convicted of complicity in attacks on the king. In 1759 he was executed and his property was confiscated from the Crown. The Quinta do Conde returned to the monastery. As a result of the Liberal Revolution of 1822 , ecclesiastical orders were dissolved in Portugal and their property was nationalized. The Quinta do Conde was sold in 1835 to the liqueur and wine producer José Maria da Fonseca .
Due to the increasing settlement of industrial companies after Portugal joined the EFTA in the 1960s, and as a result of the opening of the Ponte 25 de Abril (then called Ponte Salazar) in 1966 , the population began to grow in today's municipal area as well. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 , the local desire to form an independent congregation was met with first hearings and meetings. A submission by the Communist Party of Portugal in parliament in 1979 was not discussed due to the premature dissolution of parliament.
The community was only created in 1985 . In the 1980s and 1990s, the municipality, which is close to numerous industrial plants, recorded the strongest population growth of all municipalities in Portugal. In 1995 the community was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).
