history

Megalithic systems and other finds such as the Tholos tomb da Roça do Casal do Meio prove a settlement at least since the Bronze Age . The place belonged to the Roman province of Lusitania . Excavations show a Roman town here , including a cemetery.

The Moors built a fortress here in the 9th century. In the course of the Reconquista , the first Portuguese king, D.Afonso Henriques , conquered the fortress in 1165. The castle was destroyed during a reconquest by the Arabs at the end of the 12th century. King D.Sancho I took the entire area in 1200 with the support of French crusaders . The place named after the castle ( port. Castelo ) received city rights in 1201. The castle was expanded in 1323 and served as a retreat for the later King D. João I in 1384 during the War of Independence during the Revolution of 1383 . The independent municipality of Castelo was created in 1388.

The castle fell into disrepair in the following epochs. After various reconstructions and subsequent looting and destruction by corsairs and English pirates , the castle was finally destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 . The place was still important as a regional pilgrimage site , especially since the 18th century .

Lagoa de Albufeira

In the northwest of the municipality is the lake (and the settlement of the same name) Lagoa de Albufeira , in which fresh and salt water mix with one another.

The lake is on the one hand a bird sanctuary, on the other hand a popular water sports area close to the sea, especially for kite surfing.
