Alvor is a municipality ( Freguesia ) and small town ( Vila ) in the Portimão district , in the Algarve region , Portugal . It is located between the cities of Portimão and Lagos on a lagoon and the mouth of the Rio de Alvor . Of the around 5000 inhabitants, around 3000 live in the historic village center, which has retained its original character with narrow streets, white-painted houses and the harbor. On June 30, 2011 the community had 6154 inhabitants on an area of 15.3 km².
history
It is believed that the Phoenicians from Carthage had already created the small port "Portus Hannibalis" at this point; What is secured, however, is the Roman settlement "Ipses", which even had its own right to mint . A little outside of Alvor are the remains of a Roman villa. Around 716 the Moors conquered the place, now it was called "Albur" until it was conquered by the Christians in 1250 and got its current name. The fishing and trading village built a Manueline style church in the 16th century. In 1532 and 1755, Alvor was hit by earthquakes, the latter in particular, destroying almost all buildings. The church was reconstructed again. The richly decorated portal is remarkable.
In January 1975 , after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 and the end of the colonial war, the Alvor Agreement on Angola's independence from Portugal was passed in the local Hotel Penina . The well-known Beatles musician Paul McCartney lived in the hotel in 1968 and wrote a song for the Porto beat band Jotta Herre. Penina was released in 1969 as an EP by both Jotta Herre and the well-known group Sheiks .
Local development
The small fishing port with fish hall has been modernized. In addition to the traditional branches of business fishing, handicrafts, retail and gastronomy, the tourism industry in Alvor has now - at least in the bathing season - achieved the greatest importance. The beach is about 1–2 km southeast of the town center.
traffic
There is a road connection to the N125 coastal road five kilometers away. It is 7 kilometers to the A22 coastal motorway .
Until the 1980s, Alvor was a stop on the Linha do Algarve railway line . The station has been closed since then.
