history

Population development of the municipality (1864–2011)

As "Aqualata" it was a Roman town and was first mentioned as such in 132 BC. Documented. Little is known about its history in the Suebian Empire , the Visigoth Empire, and among the subsequent Arab Moors . The first documented mention of the place comes from the year 961, under the name of its patron saint Santa Eulália.

King D. Manuel I gave Aguada de Cima city rights on August 23, 1514 and made it the seat of a district. In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the Miguelistenkrieg that followed in 1834 , the district was dissolved for the first time in 1834 and then finally on December 31, 1836.

In 1997 Aguada de Cima was again elevated to a small town ( Vila ) after 1514 .
