Vieira de Leiria is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Marinha Grande . It has 5845 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

Location of the municipality in Marinha Grande County

history

The place was founded during the settlement policy of King D Dinis in the 13th century. The municipality of Monte Real , which was newly founded in 1512 , also included Vieira and Carvide . The first documented mention of the place under his name Vieira dates from 1527. In 1632 Carvide became a separate municipality, to which Vieira also belonged. In 1740, Vieira became an independent municipality and was given the addition of de Leiria .

In the course of the Napoleonic invasions , the place suffered severe destruction in 1810 and lost about half of its inhabitants, who were victims of the acts of war and, above all, of the epidemics that followed, and who had also moved away in large numbers and never returned.

Culture and sights

The listed event and exhibition building Auditório António Campos is dedicated to the work of the film director António Campos , but is also used for other cultural events and activities.

The residential block Bairro ex-CAR no Casal d'Anja of social housing , built from 1969 onwards, is a listed building, as are various sacred buildings , including the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda chapel , which was built in 1614 and decorated with azulejos .

The sandy beaches, especially in Praia de Vieira, are just as attractive as the extensive wooded areas of the Pinhal de Leiria and the marshland and wetlands on the Rio Lis .

economy

Traditionally, fishing, agriculture, forestry and wood processing are the important industries. Glass manufacture, which has been in operation here since 1845, and the production of files and blades are also important. While fishing has lost a lot of its importance in the last few decades and, as agriculture is mostly only practiced as a sideline, tourism, especially on Praia de Vieira beach, has gained in importance.
