geography

Vidago is located in the northern Portuguese region of Alto Trás-os-Montes , 15 km southwest of the district town of Chaves, and 45 km north of the district capital Vila Real .

history

The place was probably already inhabited by the Celtiberians and was probably already known to the Romans as a healing spring. The present-day place arose before its first mention as an insignificant village in the 12th century. In 1863 its healing springs were rediscovered. The composition of its sodium hydrogen carbonate water exceeds that of Vichy . As a result, Vidago experienced a relative boom as a health resort, with the opening of the Grande Hotel de Vidago in 1878 and a connection to the Linha do Corgo railway line, which opened in 1876, as important stages.

Vidago became independent in 1925, when it was separated from the municipality of Arcossó , and a little later became a Vila (small town).

Culture, sports and sights

A number of religious and public buildings are listed in the village, including the manor house Solar dos Machados , the local train station built in 1910, and the neo-Gothic church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição .

In the late 19th century, Vidago became a health resort and tourism has been of great importance ever since. In addition to the Palace Hotel , which was opened in 1910 and is now a listed building , there is also the Clube de Golfe de Vidago golf club , which also organizes tournaments itself. The health resort is also known for its medicinal springs, and local mineral water is sold nationwide by the Unicer company . The Vidago thermal baths are now part of the Palace Hotel .

In the place is u. a. a voluntary fire brigade , the versatile cultural association Casa de Cultura de Vidago , and the football club Vidago Futebol Clube founded in 1926 .

traffic

The place is with its own exit on the A24 motorway . Since the suspension of the Linha do Corgo railway line in March 2009, Vidago has no railway connection.
