Pias is a place and a municipality in the Portuguese region of Alentejo .

The landmark of the place is a listed clock tower from the 19th century.

history

The listed Manueline chapel of Ermida de Santa Luzia from the 16th century

Finds prove that the municipality was settled into the Bronze Age .

At the time of Roman rule, it was a town in the Lusitania Province . Two Roman roads crossed here . This importance as the location of two regionally important traffic routes was retained under the Arab rule in al-Andalus from 711 AD .

After the Reconquista in Portugal in the 13th century, the country was not assigned to a knightly order, which in the following epochs made the clear administrative affiliation of the area difficult and led to the dispute between Moura and Serpa .

The present-day location was presumably rebuilt in the course of changes in the allocation of land around 1644 and with newly settled farm workers.

The place experienced a relative development spurt after the arrival of the railroad, when the Ramal de Moura line reached the municipality in 1909.

On June 30, 1989, Pias was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).
