history

Some finds prove the presence of humans since the Paleolithic . The excavations and finds from Roman times are more important. The place name may also go back to the Romans, if Ficalho actually developed from the Latin terms Finis (for end) and Callium (for path or animal path).

The present-day village was established in 1232 as part of the new settlements after the Reconquista under King D. Sancho II.

Ficalho remained the seat of its own county until the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg . In 1836, the Ficalho district was dissolved and its only municipality of the same name was incorporated into Serpa district.
